WHAT IS AMNESIA?Amnesia is a feature film about surviving and love, against the world of human trafficking and violations of patients’ rights, based on the true stories of people and patients (some who survived, and some who didn’t).

As a strong advocate for human rights, we always wanted to speak out against these atrocities. This film is our effort, wherein we hope to scare, entertain and enlighten. Although these topics may seem so removed from the most of us, it’s frightening how close they can actually be. You never know when a friend or relative may be “Baker Acted” into an institution, or when an innocent child in your neighborhood may be approached by traffickers with promises of love and friendship and gifts, only to find themselves in a lifetime of torture and pain. By helping us get this movie made, you’re helping these people have a voice. You’re helping me tell the world that these are heinous crimes, and that we will not tolerate them… only in the light of truth will these cease to exist. People must be made aware and accountable.

WHY SUPPORT THIS FILM? Because it’s an important message, with a good story and a good surprise ending. Besides, we have an amazing cast and crew — we won’t let you down. You will be part of something special, that will get made. And, you’ll get AWESOME bragging rights!!

WHERE WILL THE MONEY GO? Our target goal, along with other money we already have pledged and used — mostly from the director’s pocket, and from the work of the cast and crew who have already put in some time to give you an idea of what this movie will be about (a teaser, and some character videos which, if you back us up — will be used to complete about half of our production costs for food, locations, wardrobe and props. This is a work of love and we’re stretching every penny. Pretty much, the cast and crew are working on deferred pay to get this film done — this means that once the movie is completed and released, and we make some sort of a profit, we’ll pay the cast and crew.

This last amount is the final stepping stone to wrap up production.

BEATING THE GOAL: our goal is the bare minimum we need to pay for locations, feed the cast and crew and buy props and wardrobe. If we beat the goal, we’ll have more money for post-production, and if we raise enough perhaps to pay the talented people who are working hard to make this happen.

IF WE DON’T HIT THE GOAL, we’ll get no money from Kickstarter. We’ll have to figure something else out. Not making the movie isn’t an option. We will get the film made one way or another, but it will take longer.

YOU WILL BE THE FIRST TO SEE: videos from location scouting, interviews with cast and crew, things that may never even make it on the DVD, we will share those videos with you.

PICK YOUR OWN REWARD: is there a specific reward you’d like, but we’re not offering it… reach out to us, and we’ll figure something out!

Hi everyone, regardless of which holiday you’re celebrating, and even if you’re not celebrating anything at the moment, I hope you have a wonderful time with friends and family, and as the year comes to a close, at least per the Gregorian calendar, you all sit and ponder about the good things that happened in the last year, and plan the good things for the coming year.

I hope those dreams all come true.

As for me, other than the personal dreams which I won’t discuss here, I hope the New Year brings a greater awareness of human trafficking and other human rights violations, and a greater resolve to bring an end to these things.

May we all find greater friends in the world, and the world find greater friends in us.

Amnesia will resume shooting in January, and we can certainly use your support, so check out our Kickstarter campaign:

CNN and Google should really look into MillionKids.org Dottie Laster of Laster Global Consulting, who’ve been fighting trafficking successfully for along time, but this is good too!

But don’t forget one very crucial thing: while rescuing survivors is paramount, what about prosecuting the people who put them there? Since in a lot of cases some of those people are big names in the community, you find a lot less of those… and with simple slaps on the wrist, how are they to ever be discouraged?

Val Gameiro
Writer, Director, Filmmaker
Austin, Texas

(CNN) — Google Inc. announced Wednesday that it’s providing $11.5 million in grants to 10 organizations working to end modern-day slavery and human trafficking.

Gary Haugen, president and CEO of International Justice Mission, one of the grant recipients, called the move a “game-changing investment.” IJM is a Washington-based human rights agency that works to rescue victims of slavery and sexual exploitation in about a dozen countries.

“This is the largest corporate step up to the challenge that is beginning to apply direct resources to the fight against slavery,” Haugen said.

According to estimates by grant recipients, Google’s support will free an estimated 12,000 people from slavery and prevent millions more from being victimized. Numbers vary widely, but policymakers, activists and scholars estimate the number of modern-day slaves at somewhere between 10 million and 30 million people worldwide.

Google’s director of charitable giving, Jacquelline Fuller, said the company chose to spotlight the issue of slavery because the topic of freedom — “the most basic of human rights,” as she puts it — resonated with company employees around the world.

“Many people are surprised to learn there are more people trapped in slavery today than any time in history,” Fuller said. “The good news is that there are solutions. Google is supporting organizations that have a proven track record and a plan to make a difference at scale.”

Google made the announcement through a link posted on its web page. The gift is part of a total of $40 million the Internet giant is giving in charitable donations during the holiday season.

The grant will be shared by newly formed coalitions of international anti-trafficking organizations. The bulk of the donation, $8 million, will go to two coalitions led by IJM in India, with about half going toward direct intervention and government-led rescue operations, and half toward advocacy and awareness projects. In addition, $1.8 million will go to the U.S. Anti-Trafficking Initiative — a partnership between Polaris Project, which operates the National Human Trafficking Resource Center hotline, Slavery Footprint, an interactive Web site and mobile app that estimates how much of a user’s lifestyle relies on forced labor, and IJM.

IJM says most of its funding comes from private donations. In 2010, it notes, less than 1% of its funding came from major corporations or corporate foundations.

“It gives us a sense of what’s possible,” said IJM’s Haugen. “We can actually change the whole balance of resources between those who are the criminals, hurting human beings and those who are on the side of those who need freedom today.”

CNN has also joined the fight against modern-day slavery and collaborates regularly with many advocacy groups, including the recipients of these Google grants. Since launching the CNN Freedom Project in March, CNN has broadcast more than 200 stories and a half-dozen documentaries on the issue of human trafficking and modern-day slavery. Nearly 2,000 people have come out of slavery, either directly or indirectly, as a result of those stories.

The Traffickers

Human traffickers lure and ensnare individuals into labor trafficking and sex trafficking situations using methods of control such as force, fraud, or coercion. There is no one profile of a trafficker. Essentially, human traffickers can be anyone who is willing to exploit another human being for profit.

Traffickers include those who recruit, transport, harbor, obtain, and exploit victims, often using force, threats, lies, or other physical and psychological methods of control. They can be foreign nationals and U.S. citizens, males and females, family members, intimate partners, acquaintances, and strangers.

Based on an analysis of human trafficking cases that have been identified, examples of potential traffickers include:

Pimps

Intimate partners/family members

Gangs and criminal networks

Brothel and massage parlor owners and managers

Growers and crewleaders in agriculture

Labor brokers

Employers of domestic servants

Small business owners and managers

Large factory owners and corporations

Traffickers lure victims into exploitative situations often by preying on their hopes to improve their lives and the lives of their families. They often promise a chance for a better life – a good job, a loving relationship, or new and exciting opportunities. In other cases, traffickers kidnap victims and use physical and psychological violence to control them, forcing them into labor or commercial sexual exploitation.

A wide range of criminals, including individual pimps, family operations, small businesses, loose-knit decentralized criminal networks, and international organized criminal operations, can be human traffickers. Often the traffickers and their victims share the same national, ethnic, or cultural background, allowing the trafficker to better understand and exploit the vulnerabilities of their victims.

There are two primary factors that drive human traffickers: high profits and low risk. This powerful combination is driving the explosive spread of human trafficking, making it one of the fastest-growing criminal industries in the world.

SULU: Philippine authorities have arrested a town vice-mayor and his aide who were both linked to human trafficking charges in Mindanao.

Limtajar Bandahala Hassan, deputy mayor of Lugus town, was arrested in an entrapment operation carried out by undercover police and military agents at Paseo del Mar park in Zamboanga City over the weekend.

Hassan is being accused of transporting illegal Filipino workers to the remote island of Taganak in Tawi-Tawi before they are transported to Malaysia’s oil-rich state of Sabah.

Two agents, one from the local police force and the army, and a civilian informant who are members of a government anti-human trafficking task force, set up the trap and paid P18,000 in marked money to the politician in exchange for their boat trip to Taganak.

Police also seized a .45-caliber pistol from the politician, who identified himself as Limtazar Baladji, but government records showed his real name as Limtajar Bandahala Hassan.

Hassan has denied all the accusations against him and said he merely owns a passenger boat that plies from Zamboanga City to Taganak Island.

“I was fixing the boat’s generator when a friend approached and told me that there were people who wanted to go to Taganak. I just told him to purchase the tickets from us, so I went out with my purser to collect the payments. I am really innocent on all these charges,” he told reporters from inside his jail in Zamboanga City.

In the past few months, the perennial controversy over psychiatric drug use has been growing considerably more heated. A January study showed a negligible difference between antidepressants and placebos in treating all but the severest cases of depression. The study became the subject of a Newsweek cover story, and the value of psychiatric drugs has recently been debated in the pages of the New Yorker, the New York Times and Salon. Many doctors and patients fiercely defend psychiatric drugs and their ability to improve lives. But others claim their popularity is a warning sign of a dangerously over-medicated culture.

The timing of Robert Whitaker’s “Anatomy of an Epidemic,” a comprehensive and highly readable history of psychiatry in the United States, couldn’t be better. An acclaimed mental health journalist and winner of a George Polk Award for his reporting on the psychiatric field, Whitaker draws on 50 years of literature and in-person interviews with patients to answer a simple question: If “wonder drugs” like Prozac are really helping people, why has the number of Americans on government disability due to mental illness skyrocketed from 1.25 million in 1987 to over 4 million today?

“Anatomy of an Epidemic” is the first book to investigate the long-term outcomes of patients treated with psychiatric drugs, and Whitaker finds that, overall, the drugs may be doing more harm than good. Adhering to studies published in prominent medical journals, he argues that, over time, patients with schizophrenia do better off medication than on it. Children who take stimulants for ADHD, he writes, are more likely to suffer from mania and bipolar disorder than those who go unmedicated. Intended to challenge the conventional wisdom about psychiatric drugs, “Anatomy” is sure to provoke a hot-tempered response, especially from those inside the psychiatric community.

Salon spoke with Robert Whitaker over the phone about the reasons behind the pharmaceutical revolution, how “anxiety” became rebranded as “depression,” and what he thinks psychiatrists are hiding from the American public.

Psychiatric drug use is a notoriously tough subject for writers, because of all the contradictory research. Why wade into it?

In 1998, I was writing a series for the Boston Globe on abuse of psychiatric patients in research settings. I came across the World Health Organization’s outcomes study for schizophrenia patients, and found that outcomes were better for poor countries of the world — like India, Colombia, Nigeria — than for the rich countries. And I was startled to find that only a small percentage of patients in those countries were medicated. I also discovered that the number of people on disability for mental illness in this country has tripled over the last 20 years.

If our psychiatric drugs are effective at preventing mental illness, I thought, why are we getting so many people unable to work? I felt we needed to look at long-term outcomes and ask: What does the evidence show? Are we improving long-term outcomes or not?

But you claim in the book that psychiatrists have long known that these drugs can cause harm.

In the late 1970s, Jonathan Cole — the father of American psychopharmacology — wrote a paper called “Is the Cure Worse Than the Disease?” that signaled that antipsychotics weren’t the lifesaving drugs that people had hoped. In it, he reviewed all of the long-term harm the drugs could cause and observed that studies had shown that at least 50 percent of all schizophrenia patients could fare well without the drugs. He wrote, “Every schizophrenic outpatient maintained on antipsychotic medication should have the benefit of an adequate trial without drugs.” This would save many from the dangers of tardive dyskinesia — involuntary body movements — as well as the financial and social burdens of prolonged drug therapy. The title of the paper poignantly sums up the awful long-term paradox.

Why didn’t this change people’s minds about psychiatric drugs?

Psychiatry essentially shut off any further public discussion of this sort. And there’s a reason for this. In the 1970s, psychiatry felt that it was in a fight for its survival. Its two prominent classes of drugs — antipsychotics, and benzodiazepines like Valium — were coming to be seen as problematic and even harmful, and sales of these drugs declined. At the same time, there’d been an explosion in the number of counselors and psychologists offering other forms of non-drug therapy.

Psychiatry saw itself in competition for patients with these other therapists, and in the late 1970s, the field realized that its advantage in the marketplace was its prescribing powers. Thus the field consciously sought to tell a public story that would support the use of its medications, and embraced the “medical model” of psychiatric disorders. This took off with the publication of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders III in 1980, which introduced many new classes of “treatable” disorders.

In a recent New Yorker article, Louis Menand suggested that anxiety drugs were rebranded as antidepressants in the ’80s, because anxiety drugs had acquired a bad name. Is that really true?

Depression and anxiety are pretty closely linked. Before benzodiapenes came out, the discomfort that younger people and working people felt was seen as anxiety, by and large. Depression was seen as less common, a disease among the middle-aged and older. It was this deep thing, where people are putting their heads in their hands and can’t move. But when the benzodiazepines were proven to be addictive and harmful, the pharmaceutical companies said, in essence, “We have this market of people who feel discomfort in their lives, which we used to call anxiety. If we can rebrand it as depression, then we can bring a new antidepressant to market.” It was a reconceptualization of discomfort, and it opened up the giant market for antidepressants as we see today.

And yet many studies have shown that antidepressants can treat depression, especially in severe cases.

In severe cases, you do see that people benefit from antidepressants, and that shows up consistently. But you still have to raise the question, even in that severe group: What happens to those medicated patients in the long term, compared to what happened in previous times? One thing that surprised me, looking at the epidemiological literature from the pre-antidepressant era, is that even severely depressed, hospitalized patients could with time expect to get well, and most did. Today, however, there’s a high incidence of patients on long-term drug therapy that become chronically ill.

What about stimulants used to treat ADHD. How effective are they?

These stimulants alter behavior in a way that teachers can appreciate. They subdue finger-tapping and disruptive symptoms. But in the 1990s, the National Institute of Mental Health started looking to see if things like Ritalin were benefiting kids with ADHD, and to this day they have no evidence that this drug treatment improves long-term functioning in any domain — the ADHD symptoms, lower delinquency rates, better performance at school, et cetera. Then the NIMH studied whether these drugs provide a long-term benefit, and they found that after three years, being on medication is actually a marker of deterioration. Some patients’ growth has been stunted, their ADHD symptoms have worsened. William Pelham, from the State University of New York at Buffalo and one of the principal investigators in that study, said, “We need to confess to parents that we’ve found no benefit.” None. And we think that with drugs, the benefits should outweigh the risks.

What’s so risky about Ritalin?

For one, a significant percentage — between 10 and 25 percent — of kids prescribed medication for ADHD will have a manic episode or psychotic episode and deteriorate in such a way that they’re diagnosed with bipolar disorder. A similar study in 2000 on pediatric bipolar disorder reported that 84 percent of the children treated for bipolar illness — at the Luci Bini Mood Disorders Clinic in New York — had been previously exposed to psychiatric medications. The author, Gianni Faeda, wrote, “Strikingly, in fewer than 10 percent of the cases was diagnosis of bipolar disorder considered initially.” The reality is that until children were medicated with stimulants and antidepressants, you didn’t see juvenile bipolar mania.

But if these studies are so groundbreaking, why have they gone unreported in the media?

Because the NIMH didn’t announce it. Just as they didn’t announce the 2007 outcome study for schizophrenia patients. In that study, the recovery rate was 40 percent for those off meds, but only 5 percent for those on meds. I checked all the NIMH press releases for 2007, and found no release on this study. I found no announcement of it in any American Psychiatric Association publication or textbook. Not a single newspaper published an account of the study. And that’s because the psychiatric establishment — the NIMH, the APA, even the National Alliance on Mental Illness, an advocacy organization — did not put out any press release about it or try to alert the media in any way.

Are you suggesting that psychiatrists are beholden to pharmaceutical companies?

Not exactly, although most of the leading academic psychiatrists act as consultants, advisors and speakers for them. The problem is that psychiatry, starting in 1980 with the publication of the DSM-III, decided to tell the public that psychiatric disorders were biological ailments, and that its drugs were safe and effective treatments for those ailments. If it suddenly announces to the public that a long-term NIMH-funded study found that the 15-year recovery rate for schizophrenia patients was 40 percent for those off meds and 5 percent for those on meds, then that story begins to fall apart. By not reporting the results, psychiatry maintains the image of its drugs in the public mind, and the value of psychiatrists in today’s therapy marketplace.

So do you think psychiatric drugs should be used at all?

I think they should be used in a selective, cautious manner. It should be understood that they’re not fixing any chemical imbalances. And honestly, they should be used on a short-term basis. But beyond this, I think we should look at programs that are getting very good results. This is what I love about Keropudas Hospital’s program in Finland. They have 20 years of great results treating newly psychotic patients. They see if patients can get better without the use of meds, and if they can’t, then they try them. It’s a best-use model, not a no-use or anti-med model. It fits with our studies done in the 1970s that found if you use this model, you get better outcomes, and a good number of people get better and go on with their lives.

Hi everyone,

here’s a quick update about the Amnesia independent psychological horror thriller that we are shooting in and around Austin, Texas.

We want to thank our newest backer on Kickstarter, Roy Gatling of AustinArtists.com for his financial as well as promotional support.

We also have a pledge for some money coming in January from Terry Melton (co-producer).

Also, we’re shooting some more teaser footage with Chaille Stidham, our new Nurse Karmen, next Friday.

In the meantime we will be cutting a new teaser with some of the footage we took that night (including, of course, some shots from the fire gag).

On Sunday, we’re going out to check a location in Lockhart for the interior Asylum shots.

And finally, we are getting our paperwork in order to qualify for the IRS Section 181 tax deductions (which means that if we get actual investors, outside of the Kickstarter campaign, that they will be able to deduct 100% on their taxes).
